Why starting an interior design business is my next move?

I never thought this day would come, but here we are, taking the leap into founding an interior design studio.

When I started studying interior design, I only had one dream: to work in a high-end reputable interior design company. In school we are told to get good grades, and build strong portfolios so we can get a job upon graduation. This is how the system works, and most people (including me) don’t question the system but rather follow it.

So this is what I focused on, getting a good job that paid the bills.

When that job came, I loved it. Being able to design and see projects come to life was a dream come true. “I finally have my dream job!” - I thought.

But that excitement died quickly.

During this time, three designers quit in less than 6 months.

They said that their efforts were not being appreciated, their ideas ignored and no credit was given to their designs, so they left.

But I didn’t quit right away, because I like to think I am not a quitter, plus I was only 19 years old, so I knew little about what a good job meant.

Months passed by and I started to experience those same things that those designers were talking about, I stopped enjoying going to work.

But I was confused,

Was it the job? The company? The CEO? The team? My poor skills? So I stayed.

After analysing the situation, and talking to my designer friends who were working at other companies, I knew what it was: the company culture was inexistent.

This complicated things - not only there weren’t systems in place, meaning that there wasn’t a design process to follow, or a structure to adhere to (it was all over the place)...

but also, designers' ideas were not being heard, considered or recognized.

Where creativity is killed, a designer feels dead.

So today, I am taking it a step further. Instead of looking for a job where I can find that culture, I am building it.

A design studio with intention, where culture matters.

Stay tunned on my socials and I'll catch you on the next one!

xoxo
